Native species of the high forests in the Amazon and it can only be found in significant concentrations in Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. Madre de Dios is the only area in Peru that has chestnut trees in sufficient concentrations for its use. These trees can reach 50 meters in height, being among the highest of the forest. They play an essential role in the conservation of the Amazonian forests, because they are only produced in a primary forest ecosystem. The fruits of the chestnut trees are coconuts with a diameter between 10 and 15 cm, inside which grow chestnuts (their seeds), wrapped in a hard and woody shell. Each coconut has approximately 18-20 shells.
Between December and March, coconuts fall from the trees; chestnut gatherers (known as Castañeros ) move to live in the middle of the Amazon forests in order to harvest the Brazil Nuts.

It is recommended to consume between 2 to 4 chestnuts a day without exceeding 30 g.
